  18. <p>     After a remote-control bomb killed Chilean exile leader
  19. Orlando Letelier and an American aide as they drove through
  20. Washington's Embassy Row in 1976, U.S. officials charged that
  21. henchmen of Chile's then ruling General Augusto Pinochet had
  22. plotted the murders. Four men indicted for the slayings escaped
  23. capture or were untouchable in Chile.
  24. </p>
  25. <p>     Last week the FBI finally caught up with Jose Suarez, 51,
  26. who is suspected by federal prosecutors of following Letelier in
  27. a car from which the bomb was detonated. The Cuban American was
  28. arrested in St. Petersburg, where he had been living under his
  29. real name for at least two years. A local policewoman identified
  30. Suarez and tipped off the FBI. U.S. officials now hope that the
  31. elected government of Patricio Aylwin will extradite or
  32. prosecute Manuel Contreras and Pedro Espinoza, two high-ranking
  33. secret-police officers accused of masterminding the
  34. assassination. If so, the U.S. might resume military aid to
  35. Chile.
